By 2026, Japan’s adult film industry is already facing a shortage of male porn actors, and the news is spreading on social media

The story spreading on social media highlights a real issue, but mixes old figures with unverified claims of foreign recruitment

In recent months a surprising claim has started circulating again on social media: in Japan’s vast adult film industry there are so few male performers alongside thousands of porn actresses that production companies are now looking abroad for new people. At first glance, the story appears to be about a fresh and unusual labour market crisis, but the background is far more complex.

The limited pool of male porn performers has indeed been a well-known problem in Japan’s AV industry for a long time. However, a significant portion of the figures quoted on social media are not new data, and the claim about current foreign recruitment is not backed by sufficiently strong, up-to-date sources. That does not make the topic any less relevant:

it clearly shows how specific labour market, social and legal challenges shape adult content production behind the camera.

Where does the famous ratio of 70 men to 10,000 women come from?

The much-quoted ratio entered the international press in 2015. One of the best-known male performers in the Japanese industry, Shimiken, said at the time that roughly seventy regularly working men were serving around ten thousand female performers. A director clarified in contemporary reports that the figure of seventy primarily referred to those reliable, frequently booked men who were consistently available for larger productions.

This is an important distinction. The number did not come from an official, nationwide professional registry, but was an industry estimate describing the active core of the market. Nor did the ten thousand women necessarily mean ten thousand performers working full-time at the same time. On the female side there are far more entrants and far more who leave after a short period, while on the male side a smaller, experienced group works again and again.

So the story did not begin in 2026. An old estimate has resurfaced on social media with new imagery and wording, making it easy to interpret as if it were a newly emerged crisis.

The shortage is not just an old internet legend

The exact headcount still cannot be verified from public statistics, but later industry comments also suggest that the pipeline of male performers remains persistently thin. In 2024 the head of an agency representing Japanese male performers publicly sought new applicants, and reports at the time again spoke of an active pool below one hundred.

This does not automatically mean that the entire Japanese adult film market is on the verge of collapse. Rather, it shows that a significant share of productions relies on very few, demonstrably reliable professionals. If one of them drops out, falls ill or retires, it is not always possible to find a suitable replacement quickly.

Work in front of the camera is not a fantasy but a strictly organised production role with major responsibilities.

Why aren’t men queuing up to apply?

From the outside, many may imagine this role to be easy and unusual work. On a professional porn shoot, however, the performer’s personal experience is not the priority; it is about meeting the production’s technical and business requirements.

A male performer must work predictably through long shoot days, in the presence of crew and cameras. He must pay attention to the director’s instructions, camera setups, lighting, continuity, his partner’s boundaries and the overall shooting order. This requires physical stamina, mental control, punctuality, appropriate communication and consistent health screening.

Beyond professional aptitude, social stigma is also a serious barrier to entry. A publicly identifiable performer must reckon with the possibility that his work could affect future job searches, housing, financial affairs and private life. Content posted on the internet may remain searchable years after leaving the profession.

Moreover, male performers’ pay does not always compensate for these long-term risks. The position of stars and regularly employed professionals is not comparable to that of a newcomer. The uncertain workload, strict availability requirements and high attrition together explain why the circle that producers can truly rely on remains narrow.

Are they really looking for new male performers abroad?

This question cannot be answered with a simple yes. In 2017 a news report appeared stating that a Japan-affiliated production company planned a male casting in Malaysia and had previously auditioned applicants in Singapore. Even at the time, however, the coverage indicated that the details and actual implementation of the events were not fully verifiable.

This one-off story, now close to a decade old, does not prove that Japan’s industry is currently conducting broad international recruitment. The post now circulating does not name a production company, a casting, an official application page or a date. The claim that “they are now turning abroad” is therefore more of a click-grabbing social media inference than a verified current piece of news.

In any case, for working abroad an online call is not enough. One must verify the production company’s background, the contract, usage rights, employment and residency conditions, age requirements, health protocol, the possibility of withdrawing consent and the local laws. Without these, a viral post cannot be considered a genuine job offer.

The 2022 Japanese regulation has reshaped the operation of the entire market

In 2022 Japan introduced a dedicated law to protect AV performers. The aim of the regulation is to reduce harm arising from coercion, misleading contracts and abuses. Among other things, the legislation mandates a cooling-off period between contract and shoot, and between shoot and publication, and under specified conditions allows contracts to be terminated without consequences and enables requests to halt distribution.

While the need for protection is not in question, practical implementation has significantly increased administration for professional studios, agencies and performers. According to a 2025 Japanese industry report, the time and effort associated with contracting multiplied. Performers, shoot content and dates must be fixed earlier, which makes replacing someone who drops out suddenly or bringing in a new performer quickly more difficult.

This environment both strengthens performers’ legal protection and increases the value of those who are experienced, vetted and reliable in the long term. The narrow pool of male performers is thus not only a numbers issue, but also a problem of production planning and risk management.

So what is true in the viral story?

It is true that Japan’s adult film industry has long had a shortage of professional male performers who can be regularly employed. It is also likely that the limited pipeline still causes problems for certain productions today. However, the oft-quoted figure of seventy is an estimate from 2015, not fresh official data.

There is also no adequate evidence that in 2026 the entire Japanese industry embarked on organised international recruitment. There have been past reports of foreign castings, but these do not allow for the conclusion of a general, current trend.

The real lesson of the story is less spectacular but more professionally interesting: adult content production also has hard-to-fill, high-requirement roles where the seemingly unique opportunity carries significant physical, mental, legal and reputational risks.
