Erotic jobs are no longer the fast track for the younger generation
In recent years, many young people have seen
erotic jobs as a quick and flexible solution in an uncertain labour market. In reality, however, things today are far more nuanced than the success stories seen on social media.
Hannah graduated in 2019 from King’s College London with a degree in business management. She planned a career in marketing, but her applications were repeatedly rejected. She eventually took a job at a make-up counter, which barely covered her city-centre rent.
On a friend’s recommendation, she got into a
striptease job.
At first she only took occasional shifts to supplement her income. She quickly realised, however, that she could earn far more in the club than in retail, so she quit and started working as an independent
stripper.
When clubs closed due to the pandemic, she danced at private events a few times a month, earning between
2,640 and 4,000 dollars per event to cover the rent. After the lockdowns, she returned to the club full-time and has been working there ever since.
After four years of study, you’d think you’d have better prospects.

adult jobs are the only area where you can really earn decent money.
OnlyFans erotic jobs and a generational wave
This is not an isolated case. The number of creator accounts on OnlyFans was around 350,000 in 2019, but by 2023 it had risen to 4.1 million, according to the company’s report. On the Adult Work escort platform, three times as many provider profiles were created in 2022 as in 2019.
Stories appearing in the media – for example, Bella Thorne, who reportedly made $1 million in 24 hours – often suggested that
online erotic content creation was a quick and easy path to prosperity.
Alongside job-market rejections and the uncertain return on degrees,
sex jobs seemed like a realistic option for many young people. The sector traditionally attracts young people, but digital platforms have enticed even more models with the promise of a
flexible schedule and
quick income.
According to a 2021 study, those taking on
escort jobs are on average 22 years old – that’s when they take up the adult job. Based on a 2024 US survey, 73% of
sex workers were between 18 and 35 years old, the majority women.
Oversupply and declining income from adult jobs
The rapid growth, however, has led to oversupply. The increase in the number of providers, combined with clients’ tightening budgets, has forced many to reduce their prices.
Several sex job workers speaking anonymously reported that they entered the profession due to the difficult labour market situation, but the saturated market now provides far less income. On online forums, the topic of reducing prices to keep clients is becoming increasingly common.
According to one worker interviewed, her income has fallen by 30% since 2019.
Something has changed in the last four months this year. People are much more tight-fisted.
Hannah is seeing the same: the club is much quieter than before.
What has actually changed?
For many young people, erotic jobs indeed seemed like a quick solution in an uncertain economic environment. Online platforms provided easy entry, and success stories amplified the image of attainable prosperity.
Now, however, as the economic situation continues to deteriorate and the market becomes saturated, more and more people are realising that competition is fierce, demand is volatile, and income is not guaranteed.
According to the RED-LIFE team, erotic jobs remain a real opportunity, but no longer an automatic “fast lane”. The erotic market is highly sensitive to economic changes, and success today requires conscious positioning, a unique presence and a long-term strategy.
Anyone entering this world should plan with these realities in mind – not just on the basis of success stories.
